Course Content
Sandalwood farming is the cultivation of aromatic sandalwood trees, valued for their fragrant wood and essential oil. It offers high profits over time.
To find perfect land for sandalwood farming, choose well-drained, red or loamy soil in a warm, semi-arid to tropical climate with good sunlight. Ensure the land has moderate rainfall (600–1000 mm) and pH between 6.0–7.5 for best growth.
Perfect host management in sandalwood farming involves planting suitable host plants like pigeon pea, neem, or red gram near sandalwood, as it is a semi-root parasite.
The proper distance between sandalwood plants is 4 to 5 meters apart, ensuring enough space for root spread, host plant growth, and healthy tree development.
Natural security in sandalwood farming includes using thorny plants or live fences like cactus or agave around the farm to deter theft and animals. Regular monitoring and boundary plantations also enhance protection.
Heartwood checking in sandalwood involves examining the tree after 8–10 years to see if the fragrant, dark-colored core (heartwood) has developed. This can be done by small core drilling or expert inspection without harming the tree.
